Videos: Jobseekers threaten larger protest at Montecasino

Demonstrators calling for local hiring priority warned they would return in numbers after police blockaded a Fourways entertainment hub's main entrance during an initial picket.

Protesters from Diepsloot, Kya Sands, Clayoven and Ginger Park gathered at the entrance today (October 12) raising concerns over hiring practices and allegations that undocumented foreign nationals are being employed, reports the Fourways Review.

Community activist Jacob Shika (45) said residents feel overlooked and want to speak directly to management rather than drop CVs into a box.

“Illegal undocumented foreign nationals must go from Montecasino,” Shika said.

Shika claimed some jobseekers were turned away for lacking required documentation or appointments.

Clayoven resident Puleng Makgetsi alleged local applicants were told their CVs would not be accepted.

Protesters threaten larger turnout

“Many foreign nationals are here in Montecasino. They are working. When we hand out our CVs to Montecasino, we are told ‘we don’t want people from Clayoven’,” she said.

Shika warned protesters will return on Wednesday (October 14) in greater numbers if management fails to respond.

Security presence at entrance

Douglasdale police officers, private security personnel and members of the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum were stationed at the entrance today to prevent access to the complex, while visitors were allowed inside.

Emily Nkabinde says she will not be voting this year because she is unemployed and claims undocumented foreign nationals are working in the country.

Montecasino representatives were also at the entrance but declined to comment on the protesters’ allegations and demands when approached.
