Suspects at large after robbing two pastors
A driveway robbery is under investigation after two unidentified pastors from Burundi were robbed of R220 000 in Douglasdale, Gauteng.
The two pastors flew into South Africa last Thursday and arranged temporary residence at Inyati Sands Estate on Leslie Avenue in Douglasdale. The suspects had allegedly followed the victims from the airport and held them at gunpoint upon arrival at their residence, Fourways Reviewreported.
Luggage, which contained passports and money, and one briefcase were stolen.
Chairperson for the estate’s board of trustees Zoe Hawkins said the incident was caught on their security cameras, and the footage had been handed over to police.
“We were very grateful for the quick response we received from both the police and our security companies,” said Hawkins.
Warrant Officer Balan Muthan of Douglasdale Police Station said it is suspected there may have been an insider element that informed the robbers of the pastors’ declaration at the airport.
Investigations are ongoing.
In January, two men were arrested for allegedly robbing five Pakistani nationals of an undisclosed amount of cash in Oakdene, Johannesburg.
“The suspects, while posing as police officers, allegedly followed the victims from the airport before they robbed them by first flashing what looked like police appointment cards at the victims before relieving them of their belongings,” said Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale.
