Tip-off leads to arrest of KZN drug dealer
A 34-year-old alleged drug dealer has been arrested for dealing in heroin and for possession of illicit cigarettes in Wentworth, KwaZulu-Natal.
Wentworth police spokesperson Lieutenant Mbaso Gumede said police received information that a flat owned by the suspect, who is infamous as a drug dealer in the Hime Road flats area, was being used to store drugs, Southlands Sun reported.
“After watching the flat for some time, the Hawks and Wentworth police officers were able to confirm that drugs were being brought in. At 9am yesterday, the officers moved in and arrested the man on charges of dealing in heroin and possession of illicit cigarettes,” added Gumede.
More than 2 000 straws of heroin and nearly 7 000 packets of cigarettes were found, along with a sizable amount of cash, said Gumede.
Police believe the drugs were transferred from Chatsworth to be sold in Wentworth, added Gumede.
The suspect will remain in police custody until his formal bail application, which police reportedly plan to oppose.
Earlier this month, a Malawian woman was arrested for allegedly being in possession of drugs with an estimated street value of R1.5 million.
The drugs were allegedly found in 38-year-old Stella Kakhobwe’s luggage during a search at the Lebombo border post, near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, said Colonel Leonard Hlathi.
