VIDEO: Durban fire spreads to adjacent factory

eThekwini Municipality emergency services are still battling the fire that broke out at a cooking oil factory and later spread to a neighbouring paint factory in Durban earlier this morning.

The large fire, whose cause is still unknown, is said to have started just after 5am at the Africa SunOil factory on South Coast Road in Mobeni.

Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng told The Citizen firefighters and other emergency personnel had been called to the scene to get the blaze under control. He added there were fears of the fire spreading to nearby factories on the same road.

“So far, there have been no injuries reported, as no one was inside the factory when the fire started,” he said.

However, provincial Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said the blaze had completely destroyed a section of the cooking oil factory, and that several firefighters had sustained minor injuries.

“Firefighters are still struggling to control [the fire], and it has now spread to an adjacent paint factory,” McKenzie said.

The damaged sustained by the neighbouring Kansai Plascon manufacturing plant was not immediately clear. McKenzie added paramedics and the fire department by late morning were still on the scene.

Meanwhile, East Coast Radio posted a short video of the blaze on their website this morning: Watch the video here.
