Pinetown murder-suicide couple identified

The Imvula Security guard who allegedly shot and killed his fiancée before turning the gun on himself has been identified.

Police identified the man as Michael Majola, 39, and his fiancée as Zethu Ngubane, 33, Highway Mail reported.

Pinetown police communications officer Constable Phindile Radebe said Majola allegedly shot and killed Ngubane on the corner of Hill and Moodie streets, in Pinetown on Wednesday.

Radebe said the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.

A case of murder and an inquest will be opened at Pinetown Police Station.

Terrified vendors along the street said it would take them a long time to forget witnessing the murder-suicide.

“We were sitting at our tables as usual when Zethu’s fiancé confronted her. They spoke for a while, and then he took her cellphone and went through it. He gave it back to her, and the next thing we knew he took out a gun and shot her. He walked away and shot himself,” said one of the vendors.

“We are still very shocked, and we do not know what caused it.”

In October last year, police identified Constable Zaine Sheik as the gunman in a shooting incident at the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Westville, KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that 27-year-old Sheik had been positively identified after the shooting. Zwane also confirmed that 24-year-old Sheree Branches, Sheik’s girlfriend, had been identified as the victim. Both were declared dead at the scene.

Pavilion management said the shooting had been related to a “domestic dispute that transpired between a male and female”.
