Teacher in court for pupil’s alleged rape

A teacher in KwaZulu-Natal is due in the Stanger Magistrates’ Court tomorrow for allegedly raping a Grade 12 pupil.

The Grade 8 Zulu teacher was arrested last week for allegedly raping a Grade 12 pupil at Tshelenkosi Secondary School in Shakaville, Kwadukuza, North Coast Courier reported.

The teacher is expected to appear in court for a bail application.

Spokesperson for the Ilembe Education department, Muzi Mahlabi, said the teacher would be suspended.

“As soon as we receive all the details about the teacher, the department will suspend him immediately pending a disciplinary hearing,” said Mahlabi.

Last month, a 55-year-old school caretaker was arrested for the alleged rape of an 11-year-old pupil at the Ncapayi Junior Secondary School in Butterworth, Eastern Cape. His arrest came after the victim told her teachers of the alleged rape. The school then relayed the incident to the mother of the child who then opened a case of rape.

In November last year, a 20-year-old primary school teacher was arrested for allegedly raping an eight-year-old pupil in Tumahole, in the Free State. The girl reportedly told her mother that her male teacher asked her to stay behind while other pupilss were leaving school before raping her. The man apparently promised her money in exchange for her silence.

“The child was taken to Parys Hospital and a test confirmed that she was indeed penetrated. We immediately went to the school and arrested the teacher,” police spokesperson Constable Peter Kareli said.
