Uhuru vocalist identified as drunk driving muso

A man arrested on Tuesday night for driving under the influence of alcohol has been identified as the award-winning Uhuru vocalist, Celimpilo Simelane.

The 31-year-old singer was travelling in a Mercedes Benz with four other passengers when Metro police officers noticed he was driving on the wrong lane and on to oncoming traffic along Kgosi Mampuru Street.

Tshwane metro police Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said Simelane told officers he had just returned from a gig in Venda, Limpopo.

“He was visibly drunk and couldn’t walk properly after they stopped him. A breathalyser test showed he was drunk,” added Mahamba.

Meanwhile, Kalawa Jazzmee Records Label Manager Gastor Serumula told The Citizen the label was aware of the allegations concerning one of their artists, Celimpilo of Uhuru, but was unable to make a comment at this stage.
