Police officer killed in Pretoria crash

A police officer was killed and another injured after a crash in Silverton, in the east of Pretoria on Thursday afternoon.

The two members of the diplomatic policing unit were apparently chasing a fleeing car when they crashed into a large sign tower and ripped out a gate at the Silverwater Crossing Centre, Rekord East reported.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said paramedics found that a motor vehicle had left the roadway and crashed into a wall.

“Upon assessment of the two occupants, paramedics found that the driver tragically lost his life in the crash, and there was nothing they could do for him,” she said.

Steinmann added the passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital after receiving treatment on scene.

In January, a police officer was killed and another injured when their car collided with a truck near Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal.

The on-duty officers were driving along the R616 between Ladysmith and Bergville when the truck allegedly veered into the path of their car, causing a head-on collision.

One of the officers died on the scene, while the other sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital, along with the truck driver.
