Two copper thieves caught red-handed
Two men aged 31 and 34 have been arrested for possession of about 130m-long copper in Jan Kempdorp, Northern Cape.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Major Dimakatso Mooi said the suspects were caught at the crime scene with the stolen copper cable, cable ties and an iron saw yesterday.
“It is alleged the suspects gained entry of the Ammo Depot’s high-risk area through crawling under the fence and tripping the electrical fence at a power switch board,” added Mooi.
The confiscated copper is valued at about R8 400. Both suspects are detained and expected to appear in court soon.
Last month, eight women were arrested after they were found in possession of copper cables inEtwatwa Mandela Section, Benoni, in Gauteng.
The women, aged between 26 and 70, were travelling in a taxi in Etwatwa Mandela Section when they were stopped by police officers, who proceeded to check the vehicle.
“When the members started searching the vehicle, they came across plastic bags, which the women were trying to shove underneath their seats,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele.
When the bags were opened, police found copper cables with an estimated street value between R40 000 and R50 000, added Sekele.
The women were arrested and detained at Etwatwa Police Station, and a case of possession of suspected stolen property was opened.
