Boitumelong teacher removed after beating kids
An investigation by the Gauteng department of education is under way after a video showing a teacher assaulting two learners was taken at Boitumelong Secondary School in Tembisa, on the East Rand.
“We became aware of the incident in the first week of April. It took place before the Easter break,” department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said.
After viewing the video, the department wrote a letter to the unidentified teacher, notifying him of its intention to suspend him. He had until last week Thursday to respond. The teacher has since been removed from the school.
In the video, the teacher is seen kicking and slapping two male learners who had failed to submit an assignment on time. He does this while swearing at them as the rest of the class watches, with some pupils laughing. The teacher is then heard calling a female pupil a b**ch.
“He has been placed in what we call a ‘precautionary transfer’ and removed him from the environment. He has been moved to the district,” she added.
Earlier this year, Boitumelong was school chosen by Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi as part of the paperless education programme in the province.
