Hijacked Benoni car goes up in flames

Police investigations are under way after a man’s hijacked car went up in flames in Benoni, on the East Rand.

The man, who was driving a black Mercedes, was allegedly pulled over by six armed men at about 7.50pm on the corner of Lancaster Road and Burnley Street last night, Benoni City Times reported.

“The men got into the car and drove away, but after the victim had walked six metres, he heard a loud noise, turned and saw only the burning car,” Benoni police spokesperson Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele said.

According to Sekele, the victim was unharmed, and the suspects are still at large.

“At this time, we don’t know exactly what happened, but we are investigating the matter further,” Sekele added.

This after video footage showing a BMW X6 on fire on the R40 near Riverside Mall in Mbombela, Mpumalanga emerged in February.

It is believed the driver was able to escape the luxury vehicle, and the fire was extinguished by employees from surrounding businesses.

The owner of the car, Midas Ndlovu said: “Although I cannot confirm what the cause of the fire was, I do know that the car’s fuel injectors were replaced when it was serviced this past week, and this may have caused the fire.”
