Suspects in court for robbing man, raping paraplegic daughter

Two suspects are expected to appear again in the Scottburgh Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal next month after they allegedly robbed a 91-year-old man and raped his paraplegic daughter.

Sibusiso Chiliza, 34, and his co-accused Khohlasane Sphamandla Duma, 29, were arrested after they allegedly broke into the victims’ home in the Park Rynie area last week. When the elderly man went to investigate, he was overpowered and allegedly beaten by the men, who wanted money and computers, South Coast Herald reported.

One of the suspects then took the pensioner to search the rooms while the other took the woman into a bedroom. She was left naked after she was raped, and the two fled.

The Umzinto K9 Unit, Scottburgh Cluster detective team and Crime Intelligence later arrested Chiliza at a tavern in Park Rynie. A cellphone and other property allegedly stolen during the house robbery was recovered.

Chiliza was also linked to another house robbery that took place in Park Rynie on April 15. Duma was arrested the next day. He was in possession of a 9mm pistol and a stolen TV.

Both men appeared in court on Monday, and both pleaded not guilty. They were remanded in custody until May 6, when they are expected to apply for bail.
