Grade 1 Laerskool Oosterkruin pupil killed by sliding gate
Police in Primrose, near Germiston, on the East Rand have opened an inquest docket after a Grade 1 pupil was killed when a sliding gate fell on her.
The incident took place at about 4pm on Monday at an aftercare centre the Laerskool Oosterkruin pupil was at in the Sunnyridge area. Mark Rudman of Emergency Medical Response Services, who was the first paramedic on scene, said the girl had sustained severe head injuries, Germiston City News reported.
“I found the little girl lying in the driveway and immediately started CPR,” he said.
Child was then transferred to the Life Roseacres Clinic, where she succumbed to her injuries. Chris Kruger, principal of Laerskool Oosterkruin, said the incident was a “huge shock” to the school.
“She was a beautiful little girl, a typical Grade 1, full of life, and we are going to miss her. It is unbelievable and I don’t know how her parents will be able to get over this,” he said.
Primrose police spokesperson Sergeant Styles Maome confirmed the incident and added an investigation was currently under way.
In January, a Grade R pupil died on the playground of a school in Tembisa, also on the East Rand.
“Based on the preliminary report we received, the learner sustained injuries while playing with other learners in the school’s playground,” Gauteng education department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said.
Paramedics were called to Welomlambo Primary School, but the Grade R pupil was declared dead on the scene.
