Security guard shot in the head during robbery

A security guard has been shot three times during a robbery in Maxwell Street in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said a man opened fire on the guard who was on his way into Standard Bank to conduct personal banking, wounding him in the back and in the head, Zululand Observer reported.

“We are unsure how many other suspects were in the vehicle,” added Mdlalose.

The suspects, who made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and a firearm, fled in a silver Volvo, registration number NPN 52523, said Mdlalose.

The victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

Empangeni police are appealing to the public with any information regarding the incident to call: 035 907 5803/06.

In January, eight security guards were allegedly attacked and tied up by a group of more than 20 men during a robbery at the Afrisam Mine in Dawn Park, Boksburg.

Two of the guards tried to fight the attackers, but they were severely beaten and later admitted to hospital in critical condition.

Police spokesperson Captain Charles Tshabalala said the guards were overpowered by the thugs, who arrived with a huge truck to load the loot.

A total of six Caterpillar truck tyres and batteries worth R700 000 were allegedly stolen by the men, who fled the scene shortly afterwards.
