VIDEO: Armed robbery outside Durban mall

Video footage shows the ambush and robbery of a man outside a busy Durban mall.

The video, captured on Tuesday, shows a white vehicle pulling into the parking area of The Pavillion Centre. Three men armed with rifles are then seen getting out of the car and approaching the victim, Rekord East reported.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the victim, a 52-year-old businessman, was accosted by the three unknown men armed with rifles.

“He was going to the bank when he was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash. Suspects sped off in their getaway vehicle,” he said.

He added a case of armed robbery was being investigated by Westville police, while no arrest have yet been made, Naicker added.

Andre Snyman, founder of eblockwatch described Durban as a war zone, with its high rates of hijackings as well as bank-related and mall robberies. According to him, gangs work with spotters in the bank.

“They are apparently not bank employees, but mostly people pretending to be clients. What you see in the video is most probably the tip of the iceberg because they have an onion ring approach – layers and layers of support,” Snyman said.

Yesterday, a security guard was shot three times during a robbery in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.

Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose said a man opened fire on the guard, who was on his way into Standard Bank to conduct personal banking, wounding him in the back and in the head.

“We are unsure how many other suspects were in the vehicle,” added Mdlalose.

The suspects, who made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and a firearm, fled in a silver Volvo, registration number NPN 52523, while the victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
