Two bodies found in Benoni mine shaft

The bodies of two suspected illegal miners were found in a shaft in Benoni, on the East Rand yesterday.

Police arrived at shaft 13, which is close to New Modder Road, and found a number of bullet cartridges around the crime scene, Benoni City Times reported.

Cases of murder have been opened at the Benoni SAPS.

Earlier this month, a shootout ensued between security personnel and suspected illegal minersafter the body of an illegal miner was found in a mineshaft in Benoni.

Benoni police spokesperson Warrant Officer Ramothakhi Maqabe said a man was shot several times in the upper body.

“When security personnel arrived on the scene, they were shot at by illegal miners, which resulted in them returning fire,” said Maqabe.

No one was injured or killed during the shootout.

In February last year, eleven illegal miners were brought to the surface after being trapped underground at an abandoned mine, also in Benoni.

“The group is going through a medical assessment, no injuries have been reported so far,” said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak.

At least 200 illegal miners were believed to be trapped.
