Suspect strangles KZN boy, ransacks house

A young boy was allegedly strangled while home alone, by a man who then stole various items to the value of R8 000 from the Isipingo house.

Isipingo police spokesperson Captain David Ragavan said the man, who called himself Neville, tricked the minor into letting him enter the house by asking for water and to use the toilet, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

“While the suspect, whose real name is Izeck Pillay from Malukazi, pretended to go to the toilet, the boy waited in the lounge, watching the fish in his fish tank. Unaware that the man was not in the bathroom, Pillay sneaked behind the minor, grabbed him around the neck and strangled him until he passed out,” added Ragavan.

The suspect then dragged the minor and locked him in the cupboard while he ransacked the house and stole various items to the value of R8 000. He fled the scene, but he was soon found and arrested, said Ragavan.

The boy’s mother said she did not know the suspect, even though he knew a lot about her.

“It is very unnerving to note that this man knew important details about me. I did inform my son to never let any strangers into our home, but being the innocent child that he is, he truly believed that this man needed help,” she said.

The Durban Magistrates’ Court sentenced Pillay to eight years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravated circumstances.

In a separate incident, six men were arrested during a house robbery in Durbanville, Cape Town in March.

Police found a house robbery in progress and the domestic worker tied up. Three men were arrested and a firearm confiscated. Another three men were arrested in a rented car, and a second gun was confiscated.
