Would-be criminal shot in the face, 4 arrested
A suspect has been shot and wounded during a struggle with a traffic officer on the R21, near the Olifantsfontein Road off-ramp near Midrand.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said four men were stopped during a stop-and-search operation by the Gauteng traffic police near the Olifantsfontein Road off-ramp close to Midrand this morning, Kempton Express reported.
Mogale said the men in a minibus drew the attention of the traffic police, and the driver was asked for his licence. “A struggle ensued between the officer and a suspect, and a shot went off, injuring the suspect. Three other suspects were arrested on the scene,” she said.
She said police found two unlicensed rifles in the minibus.
The men are facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as assaulting a police officer, Mogale said. “An additional charge of conspiracy to commit a crime might be added to the charges. They will be appearing in court soon.”
Traffic on the R21 north came to a standstill, and motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
