Woman shot during attempted hijacking in Joburg
A case of attempted hijacking and attempted murder has been opened at Bramley Police Station after a woman was shot in the leg in Dunkeld, Johannesburg today.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the victim had been followed by the suspects, Rosebank Killarney Gazette reported.
When the victim noticed the suspects following her, she decided to park in the driveway of a house on the side of Bompas Avenue. The suspects then shot at the victim. Police are still uncertain about where the suspects had started following the victim.
Earlier today, a resident’s Facebook post warned of a black Audi A5 that was allegedly involved in an armed robbery and attempted hijacking on Bompas Road. Police later confirmed the incident was an attempted hijacking.
The victim’s vehicle had been a white Range Rover Evoque. Police said the suspects did not manage to steal the victim’s vehicle, but they made off with her handbag. Bompas Road was closed off, and the victim was taken to hospital.
In March, three suspected hijackers were arrested after crashing into a tree in Rosebank, Johannesburg. Police recovered two unlicensed firearms and a hijacked white VW Jetta after the incident on Tyrwhitt Road.
Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the police, metro police and the flying squad were alerted, and police tried to stop the suspects on Tyrwhitt Avenue.
He said the suspects, aged between 29 and 38, refused to stop and drove through the red traffic light at the intersection of Tyrwhitt and Sturdee avenues. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The suspects then tried to flee, but police caught them.
