Armed robbers killed in shootout with police

Two suspected armed robbers were fatally wounded after a shootout with police in Newlands East, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to police reports, police officers received a report of a suspicious motor vehicle on Briardale Drive at about 7pm on Monday, Rising Sun Overport reported.

It is believed the suspects attempted to flee and were pursued by police until they lost control of their vehicle. During the gun battle, two suspects were killed. One was injured and taken to hospital, while the fourth suspect was arrested without any injuries.

He was detained for attempted murder. Police recovered two firearms in the suspects’ possession. Police reports further indicated the vehicle used by the suspects was previously seen in the area when houses were robbed. It is believed the men were in the area to commit more crimes.

KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said she hoped the arrests would send a clear message to criminals that police officers were not afraid of them.

“Despite losing a number of police officers at the hands of criminals, we remain committed to fighting crime in this province,” she said.

This after two suspected house robbers were certified dead after being shot in Bedfordview last October. Bedfordview Community Police Forum chairperson Gavin Henry said a gun collector on Pamin Road in Bedfordview had been at home when five robbers entered the premises.

“A 64-year-old man was accosted by five men wielding knives in his lounge while watching TV. The man fought back and managed to draw his pistol,” Bedfordview police spokesperson Mduduzi Nhlabathi told The Citizen. Nhlabathi added the other three managed to escape.
