What you need

• A medium-sized rock (scout the backyard for a smooth rock)
• Two googly eyes
• Acrylic paint (in a variety of colours)
• Paintbrush
• Mini terra cotta pot
• Hot glue gun
• Hot glue stick

How to make a pet cactus rock

1. First, help your child select their rocks. You want to look for rocks that are flat on one side so the googly eyes will go on smoothly.
2. Clean your rocks before painting.
3. Paint each rock with one or two coats of acrylic paint. Then, in a different colour, help your child customise their rock with different features (a big smile, slanted eyes, freckles, etc).
4. With a hot glue gun, glue on your googly eyes! Remember that children should not be allowed to operate a glue gun – this step is for adults only.
5. Put a little bit of paper towel or foam in the bottom of the terra cotta pot.
6. Help your child place the rock inside the pot.
