Hyundai Crater concept unveiled as futuristic off-roader
Shaped by Hyundai’s unending drive to explore, the South Korean automaker has whipped the wraps off the Crater concept.
A rugged design study of what a future Hyundai off-road SUV could look like, the South Korean automaker has unveiled the Crater concept at AutoMobility LA 2025 in Los Angeles, California.
The Crater concept’s exterior styling is based on the carmaker’s ‘Art of Steel’ design language. Hyundai says the bodywork’s chiseled panels and bold skid plates – the latter spanning the underbody – lend it a purposeful stance, with its proportions reflecting an adventurous spirit.
The design of the concept off-roader’s wheels were inspired by envisioning a hexagonal asteroid impacting a sheer metal landscape, leaving a fractal crater in its aftermath. The 18-inch items are wrapped in 33-inch off-road tyres. Underpinned by a monocoque chassis, the Crater concept offers off-road-ready approach and departure angles.
The adventure-ready concept also features an array of neat elements. The built-in recovery hooks can be used as bottle openers, and the removable wing mirrors incorporate cameras, which double as flashlights. According to Hyundai, the latter setup allows owners to capture breathtaking scenery and record their adventures, or be used for emergency situations.
The rugged interior plays host to a full-width head-up display, which projects essential driving information, including feed from the rear-view camera, onto the windscreen. Another display can be found on the angular steering wheel. A removable Bluetooth speaker is also present.
“Crater began with a question: ‘What does freedom look like?’ This vehicle stands as our answer,” said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design. “It is a vision shaped by our unending drive to explore — to inspire our customers to explore deeper and embrace the impact of adventure.”
