New Toyota MR2 in the works?

Rumours suggest Toyota is developing a mid-engined sports car, potentially reviving the iconic MR2 nameplate.

Following the reveal of the Toyota GR GT, which has been confirmed for SA, rumours have surfaced that the Japanese automaker could be working on a new MR2. According to Japanese automotive news site BestCar, Toyota has filed for a trademark for ‘GR MR2’ to be registered at the Japan Patent Office, suggesting an all-new MR2 could be in the works.

Three generations of the MR2 were produced over a period of three decades, spanning from the 1980s until the early 2000s. The sports coupé gained a reputation for its sharp driving dynamics and tuning capability, with the second generation largely considered the most sought-after iteration.

The new MR2 is rumoured to employ a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine incorporating electric assistance. Noteworthy, the electrified four-pot is rumoured to be sited midships, and produce around 370 kW and 550 N.m – the latter delivered to the road via all four wheels.

Toyota’s Gazoo Racing division has expanded rapidly in recent years, with the firm reviving the iconic ‘Supra’ nameplate, and releasing the GR Yaris, GR Corolla and new GR 86. The company has also handed the ‘GR-Sport’ treatment to the Hilux, Fortuner and Land Cruiser 300.
