Safety Tips While Renovating your home:

Whether you are a DIY expert or a beginner, safety plays a big role when you decide to get the old tool box out and start fixing stuff!

Here are ten tips to help you keep an eye on safety while you DIY away:

  1. Get the right tools for the job. Using the wrong tool could end up being very painful!
  2. Make sure your tools are well maintained and not damaged. Damaged or broken tools can be a danger to use.
  3. Check all your electrical extensions. Make sure it is still insulated all the way, accidentally picking up a lead with an open wire can be a shocking experience!
  4. If you are assembling something, read the instructions.  Ten minutes lost checking the correct procedure for new tools or parts can save you a lot of hassles.
  5. Always wear the right safety equipment, gloves and safety glasses might not make you look like a model, but they will save your eyes and hands.
  6. Protect your back! Do some reading on the right way to lift heavy objects. Always make sure there is someone ready to help you, just in case,
  7. Leave things like connecting live wires to the professionals. They know what they’re doing, and that’s why we pay them to sort out the mess.
  8. If you have small children, don’t leave your tools lying around. Kids love to play DIY with dad, but they don’t realise how dangerous tools can be.
  9. If you are working on a ladder or on the roof, make sure the ladder is secured to the building. Never stand on the top two rungs. If you can’t reach, you’re too short or the ladder is too short. Get a longer one!
  10. Most importantly, plan what you are going to do before you start doing it. Aimlessly playing around with your brand new power tools is an accident waiting to happen!
