Peri-peri sardine tikka recipe

Try our peri-peri sardine tikka recipe - a fusion of sardines marinated in spicy peri-peri sauce served with basmati rice or naan bread.

If you’re new to cooking with tinned sardines, this recipe might surprise you. Sardines are often overlooked, but they’re full of flavour, high in protein, and packed with omega-3s. When paired with a rich tomato and cream sauce, the sharp bite of peri-peri seasoning mellows into something warm and layered, giving you a curry that feels indulgent without being heavy. Add in the fragrance of sautéed onions and tikka paste, and you have the makings of a dish that will quickly become a favourite. Recipe compliments of Lucky Star.

Cooking time: 15 minutes | Serves: 3 – 4

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion
  • Tikka paste
  • 1 tin tomato
  • 1 ¼ cup heavy cream
  • Peri-peri sardines, 2 tins
  • Fresh coriander, handful finely chopped

Method

  1. Separate your sardines from the brine and set aside.
  2. Medium heat pan, melt butter and sauté onions until soft. Add your tikka paste, stir for 2 minutes, then add your tin tomatoes and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Stir occasionally until the sauce thickens.
  3. Stir in cream until incorporated.
  4. Add your fried sardines along with the brine and cook for 5 minutes. Add a bit of water if the sauce is too thick, chop in some fresh coriander and serve with basmati rice or naan bread.
