Make homemade raspberry jam with just three ingredients

Whether you spread it on warm toast, swirl it into yoghurt, or spoon it over pancakes, homemade raspberry jam is always a winner.

Few things beat the taste of homemade jam, especially when it’s made from fresh, juicy raspberries. Making jam at home might sound like a chore, but it’s surprisingly easy. You only need three ingredients – raspberries, sugar, and lemon juice – and about half an hour of your time.

Homemade jam also lets you control the flavour and texture. If you prefer chunkier jam, just mash the fruit lightly. If you prefer something smoother, strain the seeds. You can even experiment with flavour by adding vanilla or a touch of ginger.

Ingredients

  • 500 g fresh or frozen raspberries
  • 400 g white sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice

Method

1. Combine raspberries, sugar, and lemon juice in a saucepan.

2. Cook over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

3. Bring to a boil and let it bubble for 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until thickened.

4. Test by dropping a little jam on a cold plate. If it wrinkles when pushed, it’s ready.

5. Pour into sterilised jars, seal, and cool completely.

Variations

Swap the sugar for honey

Honey gives jam a lovely flavour and just enough sweetness.
How: Use about ⅓ cup of honey or maple syrup per 500g raspberries. Simmer the fruit and sweetener gently until thickened (about 20–25 minutes). Add a squeeze of lemon juice to help it set.

Note: This version will be slightly softer than traditional jam, so store it in the fridge and eat within two weeks.

Use Apple Juice or Fruit Concentrate

Apples are naturally high in pectin, which helps the jam set while adding sweetness.
How: Replace sugar with ½ cup apple juice concentrate for every 500g raspberries. Boil down until thick, stirring often. This gives a delicate, fruity flavour without adding refined sugar.
