A quick checklist of hospital bag must-haves for expecting moms

A well-packed maternity bag isn’t about having it all; it’s about having what makes you feel good.

Preparing for your baby’s arrival comes with plenty of excitement and a few nerves, too. One thing that can help you feel more grounded is knowing you’ve packed everything you’ll need for your hospital stay. Think of your hospital bag as a little piece of home, filled with comfort, care, and a few small things that will make those first moments with your baby feel calm and supported.

  1. Comfort is key

The hospital will provide the basics, but it’s the familiar comforts that make all the difference. Soft, button-up pyjamas make feedings easier, while cosy socks, your own pillow, and a warm blanket can help you settle in and rest more comfortably. If there’s space, pack a warm water bottle or small nightlight, as gentle warmth and soft light can make nighttime feedings a lot more peaceful.

  1. Care for your body

Postpartum recovery looks different for everyone, but a few essentials can make it easier. Many moms swear by nipple cream, witch hazel pads and cooling pads, and a peribottle for soothing relief. Don’t forget a hairbrush, gentle soap, towel, and comfortable underwear or maternity pads – just a few small items that bring a touch of comfort when you need it most.

  1. Nourish and recharge

Labour and recovery can be long, and hospital food doesn’t always hit the spot. Pack snacks that are easy to eat one-handed, a refillable water bottle, and maybe even your favourite tea for a calming sip between feeds. Some moms also love having their own mugs – it’s a small thing that brings a surprising amount of comfort.

  1. A few feel-good extras

It’s the personal touches that make your stay special. Bring along a Bluetooth speaker for relaxing music, a Polaroid camera to capture those first moments, or a good book or crossword to fill quiet moments. And if you want to look after your skin while you’re there, pack your moisturiser, lip balm, and hand cream to help with the dry hospital air.
