Grilled prawns with spicy plum and lime dipping sauce

Juicy grilled prawns are paired with a sweet, spicy plum and lime dipping sauce in this fresh seafood dish.

Prawns are a great choice for an easy mid-week meal. They are packed with protein and provide nutrients such as selenium, iodine, and vitamin B12. In this recipe, plum and lime sauce adds freshness and a boost of antioxidants. Recipe compliments of Juicy Delicious.

Serves: 2 to 4

Ingredients

For the prawns:

  • 600 g large prawns, peeled and deveined (tails on)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Juice and zest of 1 lime
  • 1 clove garlic, grated
  • Pinch of salt
  • Cracked black pepper

For the spicy plum and lime sauce:

  • 4 ripe plums, pitted and chopped
  • 1 small red chilli, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

To serve:

  • Fresh coriander or basil
  • Lime wedges
  • Toasted sesame seeds, optional

Method

  1. To make the sauce, place the plums, chilli, ginger, lime juice, vinegar, honey, soy sauce and sesame oil in a small saucepan.
  2. Simmer gently for 8 to 10 minutes until the plums collapse and the sauce thickens. Blend until smooth and set aside.
  3. Toss the prawns with olive oil, lime juice, zest, garlic, salt and pepper. Leave to marinate for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Heat a grill pan or braai until hot. Cook the prawns for 2 to 3 minutes per side until pink and lightly charred.
  5. Brush lightly with some of the plum sauce just before removing from the heat.
  6. Serve warm with the dipping sauce, herbs and lime wedges.

Tip: Do not marinate the prawns for too long, as the lime can start to toughen them. Cook them over high heat and pull them off as soon as they turn pink and curl into a loose C shape.
