1 guard dead, 2 injured in cash-in-transit robbery in KZN

Police are gathering evidence at the scene after a cash-carrying vehicle came under attack by robbers just south of Durban.

One security guard died and two others were injured during a cash-in-transit robbery on the M35 near Folweni in KZN this morning.

Just after 09:00, ALS Paramedics arrived at the scene to find SAPS in attendance and the scene cordoned off.

“The vehicle was found lying on its side against a property. A quick triage was done by paramedics, and one guard was found to have sustained fatal injuries. Unfortunately, there was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on scene,” says ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

He says another guard sustained critical gunshot wounds and was stabilised before a call was made to the Netcare 911 Aeromedical helicopter to airlift the guard to a level 1 trauma unit.

“A third guard sustained moderate injuries and was treated on scene before being transported to hospital,” Jamieson confirms.

Police were at the scene and the M35 was closed in both directions.

No further information is available at this stage.
