Flash floods ravage parts of Pretoria West

Emergency services have provided safety tips to keep in mind during wet weather.

Parts of Pretoria West were struck by flash floods late last night amid a Gauteng Weather Service warning to residents to expect heavy rainfall this weekend.

In circulating social media videos, areas around Zeiler Street, Pretoria West, are overrun with flood waters, making the surrounding roads unusable.

Emer-G-med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen has reminded residents of their standard safety tips to follow during wet weather.

These include:
  • Pulling over to a safe area when caught in a heavy storm.
  • Turning off all electrical and gas appliances should you be indoors during a flood.
  • Never driving on water-filled bridges or across flash-flooded rivers as only 60cm of water can wash your vehicle away.
  • Being aware of weather patterns before driving.
  • Ensuring you keep emergency numbers handy.
  • Not parking or standing under a tree during heavy rainfall as dead branches can damage your vehicle or injure you.

Residents are also encouraged to use the EMS call line 0861007911 in the case of any life-threatening emergency.
