18 shots heard in Garsfontein shoot-out

The suspects were allegedly attempting to steal a computer box from a car parked inside a residential property

A string of gunshots were heard early this morning in a shootout between a private security company and unknown suspects who were allegedly attempting to break into a car in Garsfontein.

The shootout happened at about 04:30 at a residential property.

Speaking to Pretoria Rekord, a witness who preferred to be anonymous, says the suspects were attempting to steal a computer box from a car.

They were caught in the act by the private security company and a shootout ensued.

“My fiancée and I heard two gunshots on Rubenstein drive, just outside our home,” he says.

“We heard 10 more gunshots near and around the scene of the shootout. Six more shots were fired on the N1 highway just as the suspects were fleeing the scene.”

He adds that he and his fiancée were ‘pulling an all-nighter’ when they decided to go out and get breakfast.

He says they drove past the scene and saw multiple security companies there.

“The suspects drove onto the N1 South and took the on-ramp to the R21,” he says.

“I am not sure if the law enforcement agencies were able to catch up to them.”

The security company would not comment on this matter and police could not be reached for comment by the time of publication.
