Heartbreak unfolded in Amanzimtoti this afternoon as two bodies were recovered following a devastating storm that swept a vehicle off a low-level bridge last night.

According to South Coast Sun, anguished cries of family members echoed through the area as the body of one of the victims was brought up to the road. The grief was palpable, with the tragedy striking just days before Christmas.

Bodies recovered

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the first body recovered is believed to be the driver of the Renault Triber, a man about 25 years old. He was declared deceased on the scene by paramedics.

“At around 14:30, ALS Paramedics, together with the SAPS and Metro Police Search and Rescue teams, were still on scene where the vehicle was washed off a low-level bridge,” Jamieson said. “We can confirm that a second body was recovered approximately 800 metres further downstream.”

Search continues

Emergency services continue to scour the river in an effort to locate the third missing person, as the community anxiously awaits further developments.

Authorities have urged the public to stay clear of the area while search operations continue.
