2 killed, councillor hospitalised in Gauteng shooting
A Rand Water executive was among two killed and three injured in a shooting during a back-to-school campaign.
Armed intruders on Monday barged into the community hall in Zakariyya Park, Gauteng, and fired several shots that killed two people and injured three.
The shooting occurred during the Rand Water back-to-school campaign in which 1 670 schoolchildren were to benefit from school shoes and uniforms to the tune of R470 000.
Two people, including an executive from Rand Water, were killed.
The City of Johannesburg’s chief whip and ward 122 councillor, Sithembiso Zungu, and two others were rushed to hospital.
At the scene, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla told the Rising Sun that there is a procedure to be followed when events are held at the City of Johannesburg community hall.
He said that the process is categorised by the SAPS, to determine the risk level and assess if they need to deploy additional manpower for safety reasons.
Fihla said the SAPS and the JMPD were not alerted to the event.
SAPS district communications officer Captain Jeff Phora added: “There was no meeting for this occasion, and the SAPS and JMPD didn’t know about the event. However, both departments attended to the scene.”
Two cases of murder and three of attempted murder are being investigated.
Police urge anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stop on 08600 0111 or anonymously report tip-offs on the MySAPS app.
