2 rifles and a handgun stolen in KZN cash-in-transit heist
An armed gang of about 15 robbers stole firearms and cash after they pounced on a cash van with two security officers.
Two rifles, a handgun, and an undisclosed amount of money were stolen during a cash-in-transit robbery on Vincent Dickenson Road in Cottonlands, KZN, this morning.
According to The Witness, Prem Balram, the spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa , said that they received multiple calls from the public reporting a robbery in progress, with one caller reporting rapid gunfire and an explosion.
“Reaction officers were dispatched at 09:18 and arrived on scene in convoy a few minutes later. A cash-in-transit vehicle was found engulfed in flames. First responders established that approximately 15 heavily armed suspects opened fire on the target vehicle. They thereafter utilised explosives and blew up the rear to access the cash. Two security officers were deprived of their firearms,” he said.
Balram added that eyewitnesses reported seeing the gang fleeing in a white Isuzu D Max and a white Nissan NP 200 in the direction of Ndwedwe.
