2 suspects killed in police shoot-out in Kempton Park
Two suspects died and a third was hospitalised after a police shoot-out on the R25, with officers seizing firearms and equipment linked to courier hijackings.
Two suspects were shot and killed during a high-speed chase and shoot-out with police on the R25 in Kempton Park yesterday afternoon.
According to Kempton Express, the incident occurred at around 14:00 when police attempted to stop a vehicle linked to criminal activity.
A third suspect, a 47-year-old man believed to be the owner of the vehicle, sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Police pursuit on R25
According to Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, officers signalled the suspects to stop, but they failed to comply, leading to a shoot-out between the suspects and police.
“This is another operation as part of our safer festive season plan, focusing on cash-in-transit heists and robberies of courier vehicles,” says Mthombeni.
Multi-disciplinary operation
He explains that a multi-disciplinary team, including the Tactical Response Team, Tracker teams from Gauteng and private security partners had been tracking two identified vehicles.
“As the vehicle approached the R25, the suspects were instructed to stop. They did not comply and instead started shooting at the police. The police retaliated and the vehicle eventually veered off the road, facing west,” he says.
Mthombeni confirms that two occupants seated in the passenger seats were fatally wounded at the scene, while the driver was seriously injured and transported to hospital.
Suspected links to hijackings
Police recovered two pistols, two police reflector jackets and blue lights from the suspects’ vehicle. Investigators believe the group may be linked to a series of courier vehicle hijackings across the province.
Investigations are ongoing.
