3 arrested after botched hijacking in Durban

The suspects had to be taken to the Wentworth Police Station immediately, because an angry mob had gathered.

Three men are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon after they were arrested for a botched hijacking and armed robbery on Tara Road in Wentworth, Durban, on Thursday.

It is alleged the suspects were also involved in a business robbery that occurred at a local shopping centre in Wentworth on the same day.

According to sources, the trio was arrested during a sting operation between security companies, community patrollers and the police.

The police and security companies were acting on information received about a robbery in progress on Tara Road and proceeded to the scene.

Upon arrival, the suspects tried to flee the scene in a hijacked vehicle, however, their plan was thwarted as the police and security officers were following them.

PT Alarms Tactical unit members and the police arrested the first two suspects while the other was arrested later by members of the Umlazi K9 Unit.

In a statement, PT Alarms says: “An angry mob gathered, and the suspects had to be removed immediately to Wentworth Police Station.”
