The eThekwini Municipality has reopened three previously closed bathing beaches following additional water quality tests that cleared them for public use, Berea Mail reports.

eThekwini Beach, Country Club Beach and Battery Beach were reopened on Saturday after being temporarily closed due to the detection of pollution. Blue Lagoon Beach remains closed after further tests confirmed continued pollution in the area. The reopening brings the total number of bathing beaches currently open in the municipality to 22.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana confirmed the development, saying, “eThekwini Municipality has reopened three of its four beaches that were closed, following the detection of pollution.”

She added that safety measures remain in place across all operational beaches. “All the bathing beaches are monitored by lifeguards, Metro Police officers and South African Police Service members to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season,” Sisilana said.

She said the municipality will continue to monitor water quality and has urged beachgoers to comply with safety guidelines while enjoying the coastline.
