6 arrested for truck hijacking in Kempton Park
Six men are due to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on charges of truck hijacking, attempted murder and possession of stolen goods.
Kempton Express reported the men were arrested on Sunday afternoon after a truck hijacking on the R23 near Pomona, Kempton Park.
The truck was transporting cellphone cargo worth thousands of rands. According to Tembisa Cluster acting spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela, it is alleged the truck was about to enter a certain yard when the armed men confronted the driver at gunpoint.
“They instructed the driver to make a U-turn and drive to a lodge in Kempton Park. An alert member of the Benoni Flying Squad saw the suspects offloading the goods and followed them,” explained Sekgobela.
“Upon noticing him, the suspects fired shots at him and he returned fire, and during the shootout two suspects were shot and injured,” she further added.
Both men were taken to hospital for medical attention.
Two unlicensed firearms – an R5 rifle and a shotgun – were recovered.
