6 suspected hijackers killed in shoot-out with Durban police

Law enforcement officers were on the receiving end of a hail of bullets when they caught up with nine people wanted for a spate of crimes, including murder.

Six people were killed during a shoot-out with the police in Inanda, Durban, yesterday morning.

The police received operationalised intelligence about the whereabouts of the suspects who were wanted for a spate of house robberies, murders, a business robbery and carjacking.

KZN police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker says intelligence led the police to a house in Emachobeni in Inanda.

Upon announcing their arrival, the suspects responded with a hail of bullets and the men of law returned fire, says Naicker.

“After the shoot-out, six suspects were found to have suffered fatal gunshot wounds and three more suspects, two men and a 31-year-old woman, were arrested. One police officer was grazed by a bullet on the hand,” he adds.

Naicker says two rifles and a shotgun were found in the suspects’ possession, as well as a vehicle that was hijacked in KwaDabeka in December 2023.

The suspects will appear in court soon.
