6 Zim nationals arrested for Free State farm attack

Six Zimbabwean nationals are set to appear in the Bothaville Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of house robbery and attempted rape after a farm attack in Bothaville, near Welkom in the Free State.

According to police, a 65-year-old farmer was met by the armed suspects when he returned to the farm from church on Sunday afternoon.

The suspects reportedly demanded keys to a safe before tying the farmer’s hands with a wire.

While the suspects were busy searching for the farmer’s safe, his wife arrived and was subsequently attacked by the suspects, who then tied her hands and attempted to rape her.

The suspects fled the scene with the farmer’s Ford Bantam, jewellery, 5 pistols and ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The farmer managed to untie himself and contacted police as well as neighbouring farmers.

A vehicle patrolling the area reportedly spotted the Ford Bantam, and the suspects then abandoned the vehicle and ran into a nearby corn field.

The whole area was then cordoned off while a police helicopter searched for the perpetrators.

The suspects were subsequently arrested and the stolen items recovered.

In a separate incident, a Zimbabwean was attacked at his farm in Bothaville last year.

Seven armed men reportedly attacked the 82-year-old farmer in his kitchen and hit him over the head before they tied him up alongside his wife and three employees.

The suspects reportedly made off with money and cellphones.
