7 Durban beaches closed after substance found in water

The City is currently conducting tests following the discharge of ‘abnormal, murky waters’.

UPDATE: eThekwini reopens North beaches with immediate effect

The eThekwini Municipality has made a decision to temporarily close the North, Bay, Battery, Country Club 1 and 2, eThekwini and Laguna beaches. This is due to a discharge of ‘very abnormal’ murky water from the Umgeni River.

According to the City, the decision means that bathing and any sporting activities are prohibited until further notice.

“eThekwini is currently conducting tests, the outcome of which will determine the next course of action that will be communicated to the public,” said the City.

The City apologised for the inconvenience caused to the public.
