7 hijacked buildings cut off from power in Johannesburg
A multi-agency operation to shut off electricity to illegal and unsafe properties was conducted in Rosettenville and City Deep.
City Power has disconnected seven hijacked buildings in Johannesburg as part of its latest enforcement operation, reports the Comaro Chronicle.
The multi-agency operation, conducted with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and other law enforcement authorities, targeted buildings in various parts of Johannesburg on Thursday.
The operation aims to address illegal connections, reduce losses, and maintain the electricity supply throughout the city.
The areas include Rosettenville and City Deep.
Three buildings were found to be severely dilapidated, while another was disconnected for illegal connection.
Suspected hijacked buildings in City Deep and Rosettenville were inspected, with some disconnected or found to be in critical disrepair.
“City Power’s responsibility is to ensure safety and compliance with municipal bylaws and safety standards,” said Manoko Moyo, manager for planned maintenance at the Inner City Service Delivery Centre.
City Power general manager Isaac Mangena has urged property owners and occupants to settle their accounts and ensure compliance to avoid further action.
