9-month-old kidnapped in Durban, nanny arrested in Empangeni
A nanny, expected in court today, allegedly told her boyfriend the baby she was hired to care for was theirs, investigations show.
A 35-year-old woman is expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court today after she allegedly stole a nine-month-old baby she had been hired to look after.
The Witness reports that police said the baby’s mother returned to her Durban home on Saturday afternoon to find both her child and the nanny missing.
KZN police spokesperson Paul Magwaza says when the mother contacted the woman, she claimed she was in Empangeni but failed to give a reasonable explanation for taking the baby with her.
Arrest and investigation
A case was opened at Durban Central Police Station and police later arrested the woman in Empangeni, where the baby was found unharmed.
“Further investigations into the matter revealed that the suspect had informed her boyfriend that this was their child. The boyfriend had allegedly been sending her R2 500 a month to take care of the child’s needs,” Magwaza adds.
The woman will face charges of kidnapping when she appears in court.
