Abalone worth more than R100 000 recovered

Abalone worth R134 950 has been confiscated in Bityi, Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape.

It is alleged vigilant Bityi police officers were on patrol when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle yesterday.

“When the occupants of the vehicle saw the police, they abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Upon inspecting the vehicle, police discovered sea products,” said Bityi Police Station commander Colonel Maphelo Ngame.

Ngame added Mthatha K9 Protected and Endangered Species members were contacted and identified the product as abalone.

The vehicle in which the suspects were travelling in was also confiscated.

No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.

On Monday, two men were arrested after 75kg of abalone valued at R30 000 was seized in a joint operation between police and a private security company in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape.

In a statement, spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the men, aged 18 and 42, were expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court soon.
