Abusive ECD teacher handed 5-year sentence

'The children abused by Senwametsi were aged between eleven months and four years at time of the incident' – NPA.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has confirmed that Nelly Dikeledi Senwametsi, 40, who is convicted of one count of aggravated assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm on three minors has been sentenced to five years imprisonment.

Senwametsi was sentenced in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 13 October for child abuse after she was caught on camera assaulting children last year in April.

A video clip of her abusing children at Ninnie’s Neuron’s Nursery School went viral and sparked outrage among many social media users across the country.

According to Lumka Mahanjana, NPA spokesperson for the North Gauteng region said the children abused by Senwametsi were aged between eleven months and four years at time of the incident.

The incident was caught on a video footage and Senwametsi was arrested after it circulated,” Mahanjana said.

Community members and gender-based activists dressed up in T-shirts written “No excuse for child abuse” to support the parents of the children who were victims of Senwametsi’s actions. Photo submitted.
