All systems go for Durban July

Several roads around the Greyville Racecourse will be closed off and visitors are warned not to drink and drive.

Police will be on high alert for the 128th running of the iconic Hollywoodbets Durban July horseracing event to ensure things run smoothly.

The event, happening at the Greyville Racecourse on July 6, is set to bring scores of visitors and a wave of energy and vibrance to Durban this weekend.

“Police officers and other personnel will be deployed in and around the racetrack as well as around the city to tackle problems that might disrupt the event. Police and other law enforcement will monitor the event and ensure there is peace and stability,” says SAPS Captain Carmen Rhynes.

“All people attending the Durban July need to protect their valuables. Those who are indulging in alcohol must be dropped off and picked up or use available modes of public transport.

Rhynes warned that people found to be drinking and driving will be arrested.

She warned that visitors should never leave valuables unattended and be aware that criminals might pretend to mingle with the crowd while on the lookout for something to steal.

Parking is limited and it is advised to use public transport to get to the venue.

Several roads surrounding the racecourse will be closed from tonight (July 5) until the event ends on Saturday.

Main roads to be affected:

  • DLI Avenue
  • Avondale Road
  • Gladys Mazibuko Road
  • Haden Road
  • Mitchell Cresent
  • 5th and 6th Avenue
  • Clarence Road

“The whole vicinity of Greyville Racecourse will be busy this weekend. We advise the public to use alternative routes to avoid delays,” added Rhymes.
