ANC launches Black Friday anti-racism campaign
The campaign is expected to be launched at 7pm tomorrow (5 June) by President Cyril Ramaphosa and other Alliance leaders.
The African National Congress (ANC) has called upon South Africans to unite against the demon of racism by participating in the Black Friday anti-racism campaign.
The Alliance Political Council and Secretariat released a statement on 4 June announcing that they will launch an anti-racism campaign on 5 June in solidarity with protesters in the USA.
The ANC drew attention to the global protests, sparked by the brutal murder of George Floyd, against institutional racism. “We call on all South Africans to join us on this campaign to educate, advocate and rally against the demon of racism,” said the statement.
“South Africa is standing up to be counted. The USA, and its African-American community in particular, has played a crucial role in our own struggle against the institutionalised racism of apartheid. Today, we must as a nation add our voices in solidarity to their call that: Black Lives Matter.”
The ANC is calling on all South Africans to wear black on Friday for the next three weeks in solidarity with people in the USA.
The Black Friday campaign will also highlight the racism in South Africa and police and security force brutality.
“The deaths of citizens at the hands of security forces are of deep concern to the Alliance. Security forces… must secure the safety of our communities and act against crime. They must be tough, but act in the spirit of our constitution.”
The statement also said, “The Alliance also notes that the demon of racism remains a blight on the soul of our nation, reflecting itself in institutionalised racism in apartheid geography, in the economy and social spheres.”
The ANC also drew attention to the racism and misogyny displayed on social media against Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. “As a society, this must not be tolerated, and we will and must use the institutions set up to bring the perpetrators to book.”
The campaign is expected to be launched at 7pm tomorrow (5 June) by President Cyril Ramaphosa and other Alliance leaders.
