Another pupil ‘assaulted’ by teacher at Randfontein school
In just less than a week, two pupils have been assaulted by teachers in Randfontein Secondary School, on the West Rand.
Cellphone footage obtained by Eye Witness News shows the teacher hitting the grade nine pupil with a belt in front of his classmates.
It is alleged the pupil was hit for not completing his schoolwork.
During the interview with EWN, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane said: “It’s just completely unbelievable that you have educators who continue to administer corporal punishment”.
“We will get the responsible educator to account and give us reasons why we should not take him to a disciplinary process,” she added.
In the last incident, video footage emerged showing a man believed to be a teacher assaulting a grade nine learner in full view of other pupils.
The video, recorded last month, was reportedly taken by a pupil who wished to remain anonymous. The pupil said this was not the first incidence of corporal punishment at the school.
“This happens on a regular basis. It is a daily occurrence. It is the way they deal with pupils that sometimes don’t agree with certain teachers,” the pupil said.
It is alleged three other teenagers were also beaten. The boy and three of his classmates, who tried to help him, were allegedly left bruised and with torn school shirts.
Departmental spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said a team of officials from the district had been sent to the school to gather information on the incident and compile a report, which she said should be ready this week.
“We reiterate corporal punishment is outlawed in this country,” Sekhonyane said. “It is not allowed at any of our schools.”
