Armed robber shot following hostage situation

An armed robber who, along with another suspect, was involved in a shoot-out and hostage situation in Mkuze, KwaZulu-Natal earlier today, has died.

The two men stormed the offices of a cash loans business just before 11am this morning and after a shootout with police, one of the suspects barricaded himself inside the building with staff and clients, Zululand Observer reported.

“Our police officers rushed to the BSS Loans office, where a shoot-out with the suspects ensued,” Mkuze police spokesperson Warrant Officer Zwelisha Gumbi said.

He added one of the suspects was wounded and later succumbed to his injuries.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said paramedics conducted an unsuccessful CPR resuscitation on a 25-year-old male at the scene.

The remaining suspect handed himself over to police at the scene shortly after noon.

The number of hostages that were held is not clear at this stage, however it is believed they are unharmed.
