Armed robberies on N12 near Benoni on the rise

The police have warned that these incidents could happen at any time in the day.

The police have cautioned motorists that cases of armed robbery are on the rise on the N12 highway in the region of Benoni.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, cases have been received, with incidents occurring from the Springs to Atlas Road turn-offs.

“From our information, these robberies happen all hours of the day and the assailants are heavily armed,” she said.

“We are urging motorists not to stop on the side of the road, be it to take a phone call or to relieve themselves. You are putting your life in danger.”

Police appealed to motorists to seek immediate assistance should they experience mechanical problems.

“These criminals are lurking and looking for any opportunity to strike. Motorists need to be vigilant at all times,” she said.

She said patrols in this area have been increased.
